How can I stop downloading files from my iPhone to my Mac?

I'm running out of space on my Mac and realized that everything I download on my iPhone is simultaneously downloaded on my Mac. Is there a way to turn some of that function off (I would like to keep my iMessages)? Or, would I have to completely disconnect my iCloud from my Macbook?
