Can’t add music to ipod nano?

I recently bought an ipod nano 3rd generation. I have some music i have added to my itunes library, however when i drag them to the ipod on the sidebar to add them to my

ipod, a blue box appear around the ipod menu on the sidebar as if it’s loading then just freezes? I also stop being able to close itunes so have to close itunes. If it helps, i also haven’t synced the ipod as im unable to, as a message saying “files are missing” pops up.
