iCloud documents taking up a large amount of icloud storage space (but there are no documents)

Hi all, I have run into an issue where Documents is taking the majority of my icloud space - which is stopping me from using iCloud as I want to. I have deleted all the documents from my icloud drive, bin, recently deleted, recently viewed etc. on all devices and have even used the terminal to check if there are any hidden files, which there were none.

I started conversations with Apple support on 6th June and after 2 Apple Senior Advisors have investigated the issue, it still persists. I have received no updates since 29th June & have had to delete my photos from iCloud so that I can use it again (however the storage is still not enough to backup my phone).

This appears to be a backend issue which I cannot solve and I am wondering what to do next?

I could purchase extra storage, but if I do this the issue is likely to persist & I don't really need the extra storage.

Additionally, I have pointed the Advisors to this link - iCloud documents mysteriously taking up a… - Apple Community which talks about the issue, but Apple Support don't seem interested in the solution presented here.

Any advise from the community would be appreciated. Thanks.

Move all you documents out of Documents folder and put them on a temp folder. Use the Command key to do so. Also move anything you have on your desktop into a temp folder as well with the Command key. Turn off iCloud and turn off Optimize Mac Storage. Wait a day or two and then check to see what iCloud is showing for storage. I use iCloud for junk files and back up locally to a SSD.
