Means to verify Time Capsule Disk Encryption Key ?

Is there a method to verify the correctness of the “as-recorded” encryption key used for a Time Machine Backup Disk?

Specifically in an Apple Time Capsule ?

Something akin to how sudo fdesetup validaterecovery can be used to verify a MacOS’ File Vault Recovery Key ?

Background: The Recovery Key on-record is about 8 years old.

It seems a good idea to periodically re-verify that it IS correctly recorded — i.e. before it’s needed.

AFAIK, there isn’t a means to do this directly provided.

Maybe by mounting the sparse bundle (which is probably most of what you need), and then maybe using something like timedog or tmutil verifychecksums or tmutil listbackups as a test? (Overview) (old, maybe helpful info)

Best way to test it is to restore it somewhere and then boot it, of course.

Assuming this backup is at least eight years old and hasn’t yet been migrated, maybe look to migrate it to newer storage too, or better create anew on newer storage, as old hardware can and does fail.
