What if, like a fool, I called the number provided. I disconnected before there was even an answer. How bad did I mess up?

I will be reporting the phishing text immediately of course.

Scammers will be at it for the foreseeable future. For decades, and longer.

Scamming is a business.

Adjusting and changing their scams as their response rates and profits rise and fall, and inventing new scams, too.

hacked? It is email spam just like the other scams you will see, such as those fake FedEx package delivery notices and those that claim you have a virus so you will call a fake tech support number or fall for some subscription service. Nothing to do with you being hacked.

You, and thousands or millions of others, too.

This campaign will continue for the foreseeable future, with adjustments and new variants intended to maintain the profitability of the business sending this scam spam, and will new recipients being added to the scam.

Usually sent from botnets using compromised accounts, or from faked senders, or both, and referencing phone numbers that will vary.

This is what I got. I called and he asked for my ID and first and last name and I hesitated, we got disconnected so he called me right back, from NJ. That's when I got nervous. I've dealt with Apple support and even though he was patient something felt off. I started checking the account attached to the Apple Pay. Which I should have done first. I'm not seeing any charges.

Did you give him your Apple ID? If so, you may want to look at this article:

This particular billing scam is utter word salad (see my reply above), but it certainly works.

Variations of billing scams have been ongoing for decades, if not centuries.

The “pervert” and various other sextortion scams are also common.

Lots of “you have (3) viruses!” scams, too.
