Cannot use iCloud webmail on mac

I prefer to access my iCloud email via Safari on my mac. Lately I am getting an error message:

This message cannot be loaded at this time. Try again later.

I am also being told that my messages cannot be marked read.

This occurs intermittently but happens about 80% of the time. It occurs in Safari and Chrome on my mac. This error does not occur in the mac Mail app, in any of my iOS devices or when using Edge on a PC.

I have cleared Safari's cache without resolution.

I am running Sonoma 14.6.1

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 14.6
