Why can't CD's play automatically while using my AirPods in Music

I use a MacBook Air M2 (2022) and an Apple SuperDrive. In Apple Music settings I've chosen "When a CD is inserted play CD." This works if I use the Mac's speakers or the EarBuds. It doesn't work if I use AirPods. Anybody know why? Music plays on AirPods if I play CDs that have been imported.
