iCloud Sync for Desktop and Documents

I thought I would like all of my Mac desktop and documents available on my MacBook. After selecting sync Desktop and Documents to iCloud my mac slowed to snails pace at best. So I decided to deselect the option. After finally getting all of my documents and desktop items back on my Mac, I noticed that my Desktop and Documents are still residing in iCloud, which is now taking up double space on my drive. Can I safely delete both of these items from iCloud without losing what is on my Mac? Thanks in advance for any help.

Thank you. I’ve done that but the Desktop and Document folders still show in iCloud. It also looks like iCloud is always trying to upload files (you can see the little progress chart next to iCloud). In doing further research it is suggested to log out of icloud and then log back in. Haven’t tried that yet.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.
