I am planning to get a new Mac since mine is ten years old and the OS can apparently no longer be upgraded. Will Microsoft Office Home and Student work on a new Mac (or Macbook) that is running 64-bit processor?

You might consider contacting Microsoft support to see if there is a newer version that will accept your license key (assuming there is a license key involved), if the license key is transferrable to a replacement product, or if there is a reasonable upgrade path to a new product.
That all depends on the version of the applications.
