How to resolve Drive recognition issues on iPod?

Installed new 128GB Zif SSD in Ipod 6th Gen, I get drag halt error and cannot read drive. Don't know if it is formatted

Do you have to prepare a new ssd prior to installation. If so how do I accomplish that since laptop does not recognize drive
