Airport Extreme will not extend current wifi network

I have an airport extreme extreme and I am trying to extend my modem with it, I have an Xfinity XB7-CM and would like for my extreme to just add to the network instead of creating an entire separate one, I connected the ethernet ports to the wan port on the extreme and went to utility but still my own personal network isn't showing up and the extreme just want to make a new network, any advice?

  • Connect the AirPort Extreme to the Xfinity router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection.
  • Perform a Hard Reset on the AirPort Extreme
  • Use AirPort Utility to configure the AirPort Extreme to "create a wireless network" that uses the exact same wireless network name and password as the Xfinity network

The Xfinity router and AirPort Extreme will produce what is known as a "roaming network". The signals from the Xfinity and AirPort will act like one "big" network.

I assume that the AirPort Extreme will be located at least 2-3 rooms away from the Xfinity router and will remain connected to the Xfinity using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection.

Post back if you need step by step. Setup will be much easier if you have a Mac.

I am using a macbook running the newest os, wouldn't making a network with the same name just create two networks of the same name? I want to joint it together because I have an Airport Express in my room that makes my iPod Hifi work with airplay would be more convient using one network instead of always having to switch to a second one just to hear music.

Power off the device that you are using to run the speed check, and move it to the same room as the AirPort. Power up the device again and let it run for a minute. Run the check again a few times to get an average.

What are the results near the AirPort?

Now move the phone to the same room as your Xfinity router and run the check a few times.

What are the results near the Xfinity?
