I lost 40 of my Contacts in iCloud

I lost 40 of my contacts in iCloud! These missing were on my iPad and iMac before I tried to back them up to iCloud, but instead of merging them into iCloud, they were overwritten with what was on iCloud (all contacts except these 40) and now these 40 are missing from all devices. None of the visible backups in iCloud contain these missing 40. I tried to search for my contacts in my LaCie external harddrive used to backup on a daily basis but could not find the contacts app nor any of the actual contacts data. Where can I locate the actual contacts, ie my address book, and how do I import them to my iCloud so I can sync to all devices?
