iPhone 16 Pro not turning on

My wife’s iPhone 16 Pro is not turning on. Several times I have had to push the top volume, bottom volume and then hold the right power button until the Apple came on. And it took much longer than 10 seconds and instead of it coming on by itself, the Apple would show only after I held and released the power button. Did she get a lemon or are others having this problem? She gets a new phone every year so this is not an operator error.

Hi. I had the same experience today. Was very Hassled as the iPhone 16 pro 1 TB is a usd 2000 phone.

Went to the Apple store and the technician fixed it in 30 seconds. Seems the iPhone 16 has a different hard reboot process.

Sharing the same below for all

Hard reboot is first press the volume up button on the left side once only, then press the volume down button below it once only and then keep holding the power button till the apple logo shows up.

Best wishes to all and hope you never have to use it but if you do keep this thread.

Lots of people experiencing this problem. Some asking if Apple will replace. I have heard Apple has replaced when it is completely dead bought not when it wakes up after reset. Trouble with a replacement is I hear the new one may have the same issue. The problem is getting more widespread. I have had it on and off since new 2 months ago. I have been working with engineers at Apple for over 2 weeks and they haven’t been able to find a solution. It worked okay by not allowing it to charge over 80% for about 5 weeks BUT immediately after 18.1.1 the problem returned and had continued. We are doing another log dump today after I performed more tests for them over the weekend. Not sure where this will go but I will update if I find anything out.

So I have the iPhone 16+, which I bought and set up on December 8, using the side by side method from my iPhone 11. I had my battery down to 7% last night before I plugged it in to charge (using the USB c cable that it came with and a 12V adapter) before turning it off for the night to let it charge. My iPhone 16+ is on iOS 18.2.

This morning I could not turn the phone on, so I had to keep trying using the reboot method - I plugged it into charge further thinking perhaps my charger didn't work, eventually it just randomly turn back on, I couldn't even set up a Genius Bar call since I couldn't turn on my phone for it to receive 2 factor authentication at first.

After looking at the responses here, it seems like:
1) I should not turn off my phone and charge overnight
2) I should get a 20V charger?
3) Set optimized charging to less than 100%

I will try these solutions and see what happens, luckily I'm still in warranty and now I think I need to get the additional one year AppleCare for an extra $200.

I agree with everything except #3. You can use Optimized Charging and wake up to a phone charged to 100% everyday. It is NOT necessary to set your iPhone on Charge Limit to less than 100%. However, DO use Optimized Battery Charging.

I just recently got the iPhone 16 Pro Max shut it down last night for the second time couldn’t get it on. It’s time Apple gets a fix on this ASAP for paying a lot of money for these phones. My first phone call to Apple yesterday. Nobody told me there were any issues check my hardware told me it was in my hardware finally went on the community to see hundreds of reports complaining about the same thing so either fix the 18 it started with the 18 on the firmware or give us refunds on our money for the phones. I didn’t know you were supposed to keep your phones on and never shut them off. That’s unacceptable to me. I use this phone for work. I couldn’t get on it for an hour and a half two days in a row.

What’s alarming to me is that this post/issue was posted back in Sept and I’m experiencing the same problem in DECEMBER !! Hey Applestiltskin - wake up!

This is a user to user only forum. Apple isn't here and won't see your wakeup call.

  • Have you updated your iPhone to the latest iOS 18.2?
  • Have you forced restarted your iPhone --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support (CA)
  • Do you routinely power your phone off to charge it? It's not necessary to power off an iPhone. In fact doing so prevents it from backing up while plugged into charge with Wifi on at night?

Hello, Iphone 16 user here! Last night my iphone 16 died and took a really long time to power back on, which was scary because i couldn't even see my dead battery screen or anything. I tried to factory reset it and it just did not work. I also tried connecting it to a computer using itunes but that didn't work until hours later. You would probably want to wait 12 hours + before trying to do anything to it because you would be waiting your time but no worries it is less than 24 hours. I connected it to my computer using the iTunes app and restored my phone it finally worked and turned back on. I also tried the volume up volume down and power button while it was connected to my computer so that could have helped too, hope you all find this well and i explained it good enough good luck out here!

I was having the same issue here with my brand new iPhone 16 Pro. My phone died this morning, I have had it on charge for over four hours and tried all the usual botton combos to try to get it back on. This is completely unacceptable for a brand new $1000 phone. I could not be more disappointed in Apple.

**If you are having this issue too- try this botton combo**

quick press one at a time: power, volume up, volume down. then hold power until apple icon comes on. This was the only thing that got my phone back on. Hope this helps someone!! Good luck!!

I bought my iPhone 16 Pro Max 1TB in October 2024, and I am now on my third replacement due to the phone not turning back on. I tried force restart on numerous occasions, and it still did nothing. I then booked an appointment at the Apple store, and they replaced it on each occasion as they couldn't get the phone to work. I have had Apple phones for years, and I have never had an issue with any of the models until this one. I also have an Apple MacBook and an Apple Ipad which again i have had no issues with them

The Apple 16 Pro Max is the first iPhone not to be made in China: the manufacturing/production has been moved to India, which raises the question of whether this has caused this massive failure in the new iPhone.

The new iPhone 16 Pro Max i have had replaced has also gone blank so I will have to wait till i return home from holidays to take it to an Apple store in the UK.

You SHOULD charge it overnight, with Automatic iCloud Backup enabled, as well as either Optimized Charging or 80% limit enabled. Doing so will extend the life of the battery.

It wasn’t charging that caused the iOS crash. While it is called an iPhone, it is actually a very powerful pocket-sized computer that can incidentally make phone calls. And like all computers, it will crash occasionally, and that’s what happened. To minimize the probability of that happening it may pay to restart it occasionally→Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

HINT: Another way to restart is to say; “Hey Siri, restart this iPhone"

This just happened to me too. I got the iPhone 16 Pro Max about 2 months ago. First time this has ever happened to an iPhone I own. Really scary. Thought the phone had died. It took about 10 attempts at force restart for the apple to show on the screen. Hopefully it's a software issue and they solve it on the next iOS update.

It won’t take you 10 times if you do it correctly the first time.

Have you been charging overnight?

What did Apple’s support say when you contacted them?

Best way:

  • Install the Apple Support app on your iPhone or iPad - you can contact support directly from the app, and the tech will have (with your permission) access to diagnostic data on your device

Other options:

(Note that both of the above have options to receive a callback or chat)

Bought this iPhone less than a month ago, i woke up this morning and the phone is turned off. I had to try to reset for an hour and it finally came back on thanks to this community. This is ridiculous it is a $1000 brand new phone , with this much factory issue. What are apple makers doing? People could be in a life of death situation and the phone would just stop working. They need to take accountability for this situation - how are you charging an arm and leg for a phone and making a terrible phone.
