Calculator App Issues in iOS 18

Is anyone at Apple addressing the issues with the iOS 18 calculator app on iPhone? Pressing equal after entering an equation and solving at once doesn’t allow you to calculate again without retyping everything. I use the calculator multiple times a week as a counter at work and losing this functionality is incredibly impactful.

I’ve also found that the calculator will move to scientific notation in the six figure range in vertical mode. This seems excessive, considering the old calculator would display millions without switching to scientific notation. I’m really confused why these “features” were added to the new calculator as opposed to leaving actual working features from before.

Quite literally the most pointless change to what was a decent working calculator - it is now utterly unuseable. It’s like a child’s speak and spell.

Once more pointless and unnecessary changes ruining a once great app.

why change it if it worked? It’s like it was designed by someone who never actually uses a calculator. 😡

Please can someone at Apple please add this functionality back to the calculator app, this is something I use very regularly, for compounding over months or years as part of my job.

Apple doesn't read here in this user-to-user forum for feedback or suggestions. You can, however, let them know your thoughts here:

Meanwhile, you may want to take a look at the third-party PCalc. It's not free but it is very highly regarded.

Not sure how well Apple iPhone reps monitor and consider this content, but I would suggest that everyone also send input to the iPhone User Feedback page. This calculator downgrade is something they need to hear about until they decide to fix it. Feedback - iPhone - Apple

I AM sure how well Apple iPhone reps monitor ASC: Not at all. The only people who monitor ASC are moderators, and even they don’t read every post, and they certainly don’t read for feedback. I know because once you reach level 6 you can chat with the ASC administrators directly.

Yes yes yes. Did they hand over calculator design to a math-anxious second grader? My very first pocket calculator (which cost me $59 in 1980 dollars!!) had more functions and a more usable interface than this. At the very least, it should have:

-option to display calculations as we go, like an adding machine tape, for checking back on a sequence of operations

-suddenly need to press = EVERY TIME when adding a column of numbers

-changing to scientific notation without user request to do so

lame, lame, lame. Anyone who uses a calculator would know better. Hey, did AI design it??

now I have to go find my 3d party app I deleted, all excited, when Apple announced there would be a calculator in iPadOS 18 😠

Why is it when you do an upgrade (iOS 18.1.1) that’s for security issue you mess with everything else? I.e. calculator, calendar and photos to name a few!!!

No one participating in this forum messed with anything. You can let Apple know your thoughts here:

Also, iOS 18.1.1 didn't bring any changes that I'm aware of to Photos, Calendar or Calculator. All of the major changes were made with the release of iOS 18.0.

You might consider spending some time learning how to use Photos. It's actually quite customizable.

If you don't like the current calculator, try a third party calculator. PCalc gets good reviews by forum members. You can also find hundreds of third-party calendars, one of which might better meet your needs. I like Fantastical. Week Cal has lots of great features.
