Unable to access my Apple Account as I forgot password

I set up face recognition and also “thought” i knew my apple id however when i went to download an app both failed. So, i tried to change my apple id password, entered my email, entered my phones unlock code and it said that this code was incorrect and i now have to wait. I dont understand how it can say the code is incorrect because i literally used it to unlock the phone to check it because i thought i was going mad. Now i have a notification in my settings that says i can update my password by entering my phone number and the unlock code for the phone but then it just takes me back to the settings page. Please help! I now have no access to my apple account! Thanks
