How do I set up an icloud mail acct. and end my earthlink. acct?

I've been a mac/icloud user since the late 90s. And earthlink for way to long. Seems a no-brainer to go to all iCloud. But a step-by-step process would be helpful. Anyone? And is it a good idea by the way?
