In 'Desktop and Dock' in System Settings I can only chose Safari or Duckduckgo, but in Safari settings from the drop down menu Duck is one of a choice of 5, but Safari does not appear.
Can someone explain please.

Go to Safari > Settings > General > Home Page, and enter a Home Page there, or you can assign the current page you are on as the home page by clicking "Set to Current Page". You also have options to have new window or tabs open with the Home Page or Start Page. I have mine set to Start Page, so the Home Page does not really do anything. Try both and see what you like best.
Safari is a web browser and DuckDuckGo is a search engine. If you get post a screenshot maybe I can understand how they could possibly be in the same list.
The Desktop and Dock setting is for the Default Browser and will be a browser that you have installed on your Mac.
The Settings in Safari is for the Search Engine and Safari is not a Search Engine.
