my application memory is using up too much of my available memory with very little running on my mac mini with 32GB of RAM. Why is it using up so much memory?

Is it having any negative effect on your work?
Probably not! Macs are designed to use most of their memory even when doing small tasks.
That is perfectly normal.
If you had 128 GB RAM it would probably show 100 GB being used when you were doing very little.
If you are not experiencing any real problems, forget it.
Too many people are hooked on numbers!

What does Real Mem in the Activity Monitor show for RAM usage..?
it is the RAM that is nearly full; using close to 29 out of 32 GB of RAM with hardly any programs running.
