I want to free up memory on my hard drive, somehow the iCloud is also taking up huge amounts of space of my Mac book pro

What you store on iCloud is also on your SSD. To free up space on you SSD either delete or copy over to a external SSD.
To see where the local copy is goto. /Users/yourname/Library/Mobile Documents/com-appie~CloudDocs
