I own a M1 iMac with 24" display. All good. Suppose that I need a more powerful system. Would it be possible to use a new Mac mini with the iMac as its display? Or should I buy some other display?

You will need an external display to setup the Mac mini and to use as the primary display.

There are ways to use the iMac as a secondary display, but they are not as efficient or as practical as just using a second external display.

not if you mean by using target display that feature was dropped many years ago
there are other ways but it could not be the only monitor you still need a real monitor for the mac mini

the other options would likely not perform well for movies and games the other high performance visual stuff though
