iOS 18 Digital AV Adaptor Issues (Lightning to HDMI)

Since upgrading to iOS 18 my Apple Digital AV Adapter has started playing up from certain sources.

I can’t play any content from BBC iPlayer or Discovery+ (via the Amazon Video app) something I successfully did before iOS 18.

I can still play OK from Disney+, U, Blaze, and ITVx absolutely fine. I also receive secondary display warnings from Amazon Video, Channel 4 and Sky Sports all indicating they can see the external display.

BBC iPlayer now refuses to even start any content, either streamed or downloaded. It mirrors the iPhone screen but pressing play or selecting a download is just ignored. Discovery+ (via the Amazon Video app) just mirrors the iPhone screen and when content is selected the orientation changes and a placeholder screen appears with a spinning symbol. Nothing else. Removing the cable from the phone allows these apps to function again.

Any help appreciated though I suspect app issues rather than iOS or AV cable problems?

Contacted the BBC. Looks like I’ve been lucky up until now. 🙄

Apple have removed my BBC link.

If you want the official info from the BBC go to the ‘iPlayer help home’ and look at the section ‘recent changes to iPlayer’. It’s in there under ‘Can I connect my iOS device to my TV via HDMI?’

We know that some users would like to connect their iPhone or iPad to their TV via HDMI in order to watch iPlayer programmes on a bigger screen.

While this may work for some, watching downloaded programmes or streams in this way isn't officially supported and so we can offer no guarantees or support if there are issues when watching via HDMI.

Not an issue with iPhone or the Apple AV HDMI Adapter. Apple TV+ plays downloads without any problems. It’s the BBC not keeping up with technology again.

This will be of little help, but I have come to this forum to report the same. iPhone on iOS 18 won’t play the downloads just unresponsive. They play perfectly well if I am not plugged into the HDMI adapter. My iPad plays on iOS 17 and are mirrored perfectly. As you say it is probably an app issue.
