USB- C to USB Adapter Disconnecting

Hey! I am currently going through this issue whenever I connect my mouse to my laptop through an Apple USB-C to USB adapter, it disconnects the moment my laptop goes to sleep or I close the lid, when I turn my laptop back on, I have to take the adapter out and re-insert it every time. I have tried this with other adapters not from Apple and they don't have this issue, I'm wondering is this is only an Apple software thing.

Thanks!

MacBook Air, macOS 15.0

From my experience, this seems to be an issue with some Apple-branded USB adapters (although 3rd-party adapters are not immune to this) , and it appears to be tied to how Apple’s power management interacts with its USB hardware. Apple's adapters tend to prioritize power conservation more aggressively, which can cause connected devices, especially low-power peripherals like mice, to lose connection once the laptop enters sleep mode or the lid is closed. When the laptop wakes, it may fail to reinitialize the device until the adapter is removed and reconnected, as you’ve experienced.

Non-Apple adapters generally don’t have the same strict power management protocols, allowing devices to maintain a stable connection even during sleep mode.

To avoid this, you have a number of choices:

  • You can continue using a third-party adapter
  • You can try disabling “Put hard disks to sleep when possible” in the Energy Saver settings on macOS.
  • Getting a USB hub with its own power supply.
