Difficulty in charging Apple Pen Gen 2

My apple pen can charge but only after 10-20 minutes of repeatedly inserting and removing it from the magnetic charging area on my ipad. The only way I can tell if its charging is from the battery widget because the pop up that tells me when its connected or charging will tell me its charging even when it isnt. Does anyone have a similar problem or know how to fix this?
