Icloud not syncing to Macbook

I’m trying to update my Mac, which has been slowing down, but I’m running into storage limitations—I need at least 20GB of free space for the update. I recently upgraded to the 2TB iCloud storage plan and synced it with my Mac, hoping this would free up the necessary space. However, after following every guide I could find, I’m still unable to resolve the issue.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:

• Enabled Automatic Sync in settings

• Enabled Sync for Desktop and Documents folders

• Confirmed I’m logged into the correct iCloud+ account with the 2TB plan

Additionally, when I try to use the “Store in iCloud” option, nothing happens. The “Optimize” button appears for a split second and then reverts back to “Store in iCloud” without any action taking place.

If you could take a look at the screenshots below and provide guidance on resolving this, I would really appreciate it.

What ever you put on iCloud from your Mac is still on your Mac. To save room, you can stop using Messages on iCloud. Turn Messages off on iCloud and in the app. It with take 30 days to get of those if you set Message to 30 days. That will save 6.6 GB. I would backup your photos to a external SSD and then start deleting the ones you backed up on the SSD. That will free up space as well. I would also disable any apps that are syncing to iCloud. You will find them in Manage.
