HomePod so buggy it's not worth it. what am I missing?

What is up with Apple?! Seems like their products just aren't what they used to be. I keep telling myself it's time to move on after experiences like this and for some reason I buy another bug ridden product.


We have two HomePods at the office (now everyone thinks we should have bough Sonos). They constantly stop playing, drop out of stereo, can't find them in the home app and now they have been "configuring" for over a day and a half.


Apple says they need to be moved because of wifi interference but they are literally within 10 feet of the router with nothing blocking them.


Any suggestions why they keep dropping stereo, one or both randomly drops off of the home app, have to hard reset them and then they work for a while until they don't. Now they both are stuck configuring.

Sounds like your Wifi is connecting using the 2.4Ghz band. Make sure the WiFi network is created with a 5Ghz only band. The 2.4Ghz band suffers from severe interference from other devices and that would include a router that is close to it. This band is still available only to be compatible with older devices, but is no longer a usable technology with the many WiFi devices that are available.


After you are connected to the 5Ghz only network, reset the HomePods and it is likely to resolve all the problems.

What did you do to check the network is using 5Ghz only?

Do you know the channel number that it is using?


A dual band router that supports 5Ghz, rarely connects on that band consistently. It does require creating a specific network that does not allow a 2.4Ghz connection. There is no way to check the band on an iPhone, it will require router access to either view the device list for the connection or view the settings for the network that was created to make sure it has a setting for 5Ghz only.

Yes it's in an office building so there are other wifi networks. Is this thing so dumb it can't stay on the same wifi channel? And yes, I've heard apple support tell me it needs to be close to the router, if I move it any closer it would be almost sitting on the wifi router.


Seems like it's software to me.


And by the way, before I responded to this I just double checked and the two HomePods are still "configuring" which has been happening now for about 72 hours......
