Air Tag beeps in car when someone else is driving it.

Auto theft has become too common in our neighborhood. My wife and I decied to put air tags in our cars so that if they were ever stolen we would be able to know where they are. Got some air tags and I linked them with my account.

Now, whenever my wife drives her car the air tag beeps while she is driving and gets alerts on her phone.

So my questions: how do we stop the beeping for her? And more so, if someone were to steal our car, they would hear the beeping and get alerts on their phone that there was an air tag in the car....in which one would assume that if it was beeping they could just find it and remove it.

What am I missing here???

AirTags are intended for lost stuff, not for stolen stuff.

Adding a tracker to others can also happens with stalking others, and other sorts of criminal activities. Hence the beep.

To reduce the beeping, you can share an AirTag with others: Share an AirTag or other item in Find My on iPhone - Apple Support

If you want a tracker for potentially-stolen stuff, check with a carrier for cellular GP tracker options.

Woah...I feel foolish I didn't even think of this. Makes sence.

Thanks for the link to share the air tag....I'll definately do that. That will at least keep it from beeping for my wife (and I'd assume stop the push notifications too). Much appreciated.

Ok, something that is being seriously missed in this thread is that, even if you resolve the issue about the tag beeping, it does not resolve the issue that a car thief, who happens to have either an iPhone or Android phone, will get a notification that an AirTag is "following" them.

They can then use an app on their phone to help them locate the tag and disable it.

The bottom line? If you want to help recover your car if it is stolen, you need to get a dedicated GPS tracker, like the LoJack, for this purpose. The AirTag is NOT designed as a substitute for this.
