I've got a USB bus in the USB port on my Mini. I plug in an external drive for BUs. I also plug in a thumb drive for BUs. It all used to work. I upgraded to Sequoia a few days ago. Now the drives won't eject because something is using them. Tried logging out, powering down, etc. Nothing works except force eject. Has Apple got a bug?

I may have found a solution that doesn't involve erasing the drive.
Settings > Spotlight > Search Privacy > + add the external drive the exclusion list
This worked for me, but you need to manually add all external drives that you use.
Hey thanks a lot Adrian. This worked for me (using Macbook Pro M4 Sequoia). I don't tend to use Spotlight so it's a fine solution for the moment.
Unfortunately, I got a "cannot add a Time Machine backup" to the privacy list error (since I am trying to figure out how to not force eject my Time Machine/external HD every night).
I upgraded to CCC 7.04 Build 8082 and have no problem ejecting mechanical external HD (WD My Passport), irrespective of whether CCC is active or not.
Brand new MacBook Pro with Sequoia 15.1.1. Unfortunately, just tried this solution but it didn't work for me.

I don't have either Backblaze or CCC so that is not what is keeping my SDD from ejecting.
Same is happening to me. I'm not using back blaze or CCC. It's Sequoia that is causing the issues. I had no problems before I updated to Sequioa 15.1.1.

Update....it sort of works. I notice that the drives it doesn't work on are all my CCC backup drives. The rest are now fine.

Well, thank you for that answer - certainly disappointing but I'll have to take back what I said about Apple. And buy some Crucial SSDs...
