Can't update my 7th generation Ipad model MW752B/A to IOS 18

My wife and I have 7th generation Ipad models MW752B/A and MW742B/A respectively. As these are only 32GB storage, we have to plug into the laptop and use Itunes to do IOS software updates as there is not enough storage on the ipads for the enormous IOS updates these days.

My update (model MW742B/A) works fine and updated successfully. However, my wife's (model MW752B/A) says the version (17.7.2) is the current version when we check for update on Itunes. When we do the same on her Ipad it says that version 18.1.1 is available but can't be downloaded as there is not enough space (so the Ipad "knows" it needs to update, but Itunes doesn't, if that makes sense).

I have tried restarting the Ipad and the laptop, and the Itunes software says it is up to date.

Can anyone help me ?!

Regrettably, you are always going to struggle with devices with minimal internal storage. These devices are principally intended for use where you don't intend to locally store files or data. Should you consider replacing your current iPads, you would be wise to consider devices with 256GB or more local storage; it is far better to have more storage than you need, than to need more storage than you have.

It is generally recommended that you maintain 4-6GB of free space at all times - as your iPad needs some temporary space to complete some tasks - such as performing system software updates. Major version updates generally require, at least temporarily, double the published space requirement.

A system software update requires sufficient space to be downloaded, unpacked and verified prior to installation - major version updates (such as updating from iPadOS 16.x to iPadOS 17) requiring considerably more space than an incremental point-update. After the update is successfully completed, temporary files are automatically deleted - returning free space. Using a Mac or Windows PC to perform the update reduces the need for additional temporary space on the target device - as the update is initially downloaded, unpacked and verified by the computer - however, you still require space to accommodate installation of the update on the target device.

If your internal storage is full, or is insufficient for the task that you need to perform, your only option is to better manage the storage that you have - and delete unused Apps or unneeded data.

“Offloading” Apps can be a helpful method of creating temporary space for a software update.

External storage options can often help with managing limited internal storage. Depending upon your iPad model, the iPad will either have a Lightning or USB-C port - and may therefore require either an Adapter or USB hub to connect the USB Storage device. If your iPad has a Lightning port, you’ll need an Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter:

Thanks - very informative and I have now applied everything I can to free up as much storage as possible (over 8GB now), with the same results. I think I have reached the tipping point where the amount of systems storage plus update storage needed to apply the update is greater than the storage the Ipad has.

HOWEVER - my point is that I should still be able to apply the update by plugging into my laptop and using Itunes, and the issue I am facing is not that I don't have enough storage (I updated my own Ipad with far less storage available) but the the Itunes App thinks I am already at the latest version of IOS (17.7.2).

I can't get to the point where it calculates available storage as I get the message "This version of the iPad software (17.7.2) is the current version" when checking for software updates in Itunes.
