Smart lists in macOS contacts not carried over in iOS contacts

Smart lists I created in macOS Contacts don’t appear in the iOS Contacts app. This is irritating, as these categories are very useful for quickly identifying and calling someone. Former main purpose of the iPhone.

static list do not make it for me as when I create new contacts from the iPhone they would not appear dynamically in the appropriate static lists. It would take constant manual update of the static lists to make it usable.

iOS Contacts also seems to lack a tagging system for organizing contacts. Has anyone found a solution or workaround for this issue?
