How do you permanently get rid of the **** things? Every time I make them vanish and put all my icons in alphabetical order something causes me to need to switch off the pad and switch on again.
Lo and bloody behold the widgets come back and the icons are all over the place. Why is there not a simple go away button! I do not want the things. I am running 18.1.1.

Long-press on an empty area of your screen until icons wiggle.
tap the minus sign to remove the widget
Thanks for that unfortunately if at any time I need to switch the pad off then on again…back they come!
