This happens pretty frequently. Clicking on Mac Messages (Sonoma 14.7.2) in the dock, I am informed that "35213 (1 unread)". Duh? None of my messages are unread, nor are they unread on my iPhone. In Messages, I select View->Unread Messages, and none appear. I sync iCloud, and that message still appears. I kill the app and restart it, and the message still appears.
What is Messages trying to tell me? What is 35213?

Somebody (not me) wrote this script that I run in "SCRIPT EDITOR" application and its always worked for me. It just quits Messages, quits the Dock, and restarts Messages.

FWIW "osascript -e 'tell application "Dock" to quit' " in the terminal seems to kill and restart the dock. That may have the same effect.
Actually, the "35213 (1 unread)" message disappeared on it's own the next day. Um, what's the "Dock" application? "Force Quit Applications" doesn't know about it, and it isn't in Applications or Utilities. Maybe you mean restart Finder?
I'm not a programmer. The "dock" is the system process (not sure the right word maybe a hidden application??) that has your application icons at bottom or side of screen. Makes the icons jump out when you move your cursor to where the dock is. The dock process can be quit using a script that I shared. I didn't write the script, I just know the script works. Open the Application "Script Editor" (Look in Applications >> Utilities >> Script Editor) and paste in the script and click the RUN icon and voila you should be set.
Actually, that odd unread notification reappeared (it has something to do with deleted messages), and that "osascript -e 'tell application "Dock" to quit' " didn't fix it. Nor did relaunch of Finder. But it is clear that that odd message seems to evaporate by itself eventually.
