Mac Mini M4 USB Keyboard/Mouse Issues with KVM

I upgraded from my Mac Mini M1 to the M4. I have a TESmart KVM switch which worked flawlessly with my old M1 Mac Mini and the three other PCs that I have connected to it. The M4 recognized my trackball and keyboard for about 10 minutes. Ever since then, nothing, NADA. I'm about ready to send this thing into space or sell it. I have tried using a USB hub, USB-A to USB-C converter, and have tried all five USB-C ports on the M4. Nothing works. It is beyond frustrating. Anyone else having this issue?

Mac mini, macOS 15.2

Thanks XeroMaster for the reply.

  1. When using the KVM, I cannot log in as the keyboard and trackball do not work.
  2. I power cycled many times, no luck unfortunately.
  3. I did check for that and there doesn't appear to be one.
  4. Direct connect works, but then that defeats the purpose of having a KVM switch.
  5. I tried a different port on the KVM, no difference unfortunately
  6. I will give this a try as it will be the last effort before I sell the mini.

That sounds frustrating! Here are a few steps to get your keyboard and mouse working with the KVM switch on your M4 Mac Mini:

  1. Check macOS Settings:
    • Go to System Settings > Keyboard and Mouse, and see if they’re being detected.
  1. Power Cycle the KVM:
    • Disconnect the KVM from power for a few minutes. Reconnect it and make sure your Mac Mini is on the correct input channel.
  1. Update Firmware:
    • Check if TESmart has a firmware update for your KVM switch. An update may resolve compatibility with newer Macs.
  1. Direct Connection Test:
    • Connect the keyboard and mouse directly to the Mac Mini (bypass the KVM) to confirm they work fine.
  1. Try Different Cables:
    • Use high-quality USB-C to USB-A cables or hubs for the connection.
  1. Reset SMC/NVRAM (if applicable):
    • Shut down your Mac Mini, unplug it for 10 seconds, then restart.

If it still doesn’t work, TESmart or Apple Support might have insights. Hope this helps!

You know what, I bought me a new MacBook Pro 16 M4. The last 3 days everything works fine, I was switching now from Windows and Linux to Mac. Because I heard so much good I want to try MacOS X. And I was so happy since today morning, where suddenly my USB Logitech receiver plugged in a KVM Switch does not work properly anymore. It works at the MacBook, but not in the Switch. I tried everything, sometimes when I reboot it worked. But often not, especially after wake up from hibernate. Until I added a USB 2.0 10cm extension cable between the KVM and the USB receiver. The HDMI Ports are so close and I also changed it to USB C to HDMI, so maybe the HDMI/USB C cable influence the USB receiver so much that it did not work properly. (I have seen such issues also with USB 3 and headsets). So I think it is maybe important to use an USB 2.0.

And finally by the end of the day, I have done nothing else but fixing my issue. But I am happy now.

Hope this helps anybody who stumbles across this issue and cannot update their KVM.

I am trying to be patient, but they simply are not responding to me. Is there any chance at all you would be willing to share the firmware file with me? I realize it is at my own peril, etc. but I am getting somewhat frustrated and a bit desperate to get this KVM fully functional again. I need to switch between this Mini and a Windows machine several times a day as a part of my workflow and this is beyond inconvenient at this point. Please reconsider! Thank you VERY much.

My saga continues... I also made sure I was using a (blue) USB 3.0 A to B (printer) cable. No change. They sent me a firmware file, but just before I was about to flash it, I wanted to make absolutely sure that it was the correct file so I inquired further. That then prompted them to request the serial # and a picture of the front of the KVM. Apparently for my particular model (HKS0403A1U) there are at least two hardware versions. Too much Chinesium for my tastes. They don't impress me as being very organized/professional. They should have a dedicated section for each model and specify what version falls under what serial number range, etc. They didn't update their site/messaging that they were closed for the Chinese New Year, leaving me to wonder why they were not responding to me. Frustrating to say they least...

Temporary solution:

I'm have the same issue with a Mac Mini M4. It's a Tesmart KVM shared with a windows server. The temporary solution I've found is to use the USB 2.0 input on the KVM instead of the mouse/keyboard inputs. In order to connect more devices you'll need a USB hub. This got the mini to detect my mouse and magic keyboard and the magic keyboard fingerprint reader still works(the magic KB is plugged in so windows can use it too).
