Why are my imported songs greyed out in Apple Music?

I imported my cd collection to Apple Music on my iMac and all was well initially. Then I started noticing that a lot of content was greyed out when I tried to play albums through my car from my iPhone so I checked my iMac and they were greyed out on there as well. Some were whole albums and some were just a few songs on albums greyed. I’ve spent the last few hours trying to solve the problem but nothing has worked. I’m guessing that the problem started on the iMac and then it was synced over to my iPhone? The albums and songs are visible on both but greyed out and not playable. If I right click on a greyed song and get info in the file tab it says it’s waiting to upload to iCloud but updating iCloud through the settings does nothing. I think Apple are now getting so complicated they are creating a tangled knot that is too complex to unravel.
