Because the updated credit card has the same number BUT now a new expiry date - I can't add the new credit card - as same number - and can't remove the old credit card - as there would be no payment method?
So how to do I change over to the new card before the subscription runs out in just over a week?

Thank you - I will try your first suggestion as I am sure Apple will be in contact straight away when the funds don't automatically materialize.
Wait for it to fail when Apple attempts next week and notifies you, and then update. Or if you have another card, add, then remove the old card, then add it again, then remove the new card.
maybe you can add a paypall or set it to none No None Option for Apple ID Payment? Fix It Here!

Thank you - the NONE option sounds very inviting - but I do wish to continue with my AppleTV+ subscription.
I will take hcsitas advice and wait for Apple to come to me after no funds arrive.
