Apple Pencil Double Tap stops working after docking

The apple pencil does not switch to eraser or do anything when double tapping after being docked to the iPad.

If I "forget this device" to my Apple Pencil and reconnect it, it is able to switch to eraser on double tap but the moment I redock it, it loses that feature.

I tried switching with a friend and have determined that it's a fault with the pencil. If anyone knows how to troubleshoot this or how it is caused, please let me know.

Having demonstrated that the Pencil itself has a fault, your only option is to replace the defective Pencil.

If your Apple Pencil is within its warranty period, or you have an active AppleCare+ plan that provides coverage for your iPad (and therefore associated accessories that were purchased at the same time as the iPad), you should contact Apple.

You can contact the Apple Support Team using the Get Support link at top-right of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) where the technicians will be able to assess your iPad and Pencil - and you can explore your available options for remedy:

I have the same problem. I believe that it started with the last ISO update.

My old pencil was pretty beat up, it even had a crack on the side which I had glued over a year ago. Common sense says that most likely it was the pencil finally failing. So about a week ago I bought a new one. The problem didn’t go away. It appears that it was NOT the pencil.

Oh but it doesn’t stop there. My iPad Pro had a screen problem so I took it into an Apple store today (01/22/2025) and they exchanged it with a new iPad Pro.

I came home, went through all set up steps, and I started using my NEW pencil with my NEW iPad. Sure enough, the problem is there. There is no way anyone can tell me that it’s a hardware problem now. It is a software problem.

I hate it went people shine you off like you are imagining things or you don’t know what you are talking about.

I forgot to mention that it doesn’t do it all the time. Double tapping can work fine for a new minutes (sometimes seconds) and then start acting up. Once it does, the only way to get it to work is to put the pen back in the side of the iPad for a few seconds. Sometimes I have to do that t a couple of times before it starts working normally.

Also, when it starts acting up, you can’t even change the tool manually. In other words, tapping on the circle that pops up when you double tap and shows you the tool you are using. When you tap on the circle, rather than showing you the tools bar, it hides. There is no way of fixing it. Other than like I mentioned before, putting the pencil back to charge on the iPad’s side.

I checked the Apple Pencil settings and they all look good to me. Double tapping is set to “switch between current tool and eraser.” I’ve tried turn off double tap and turning it back on, but the pencil still acts up whenever it wants to.

I also tried removing the pencil from the Bluetooth settings, and then reconnecting it, but that doesn’t work either. Sooner or later it acts up again.

Oh and I almost forgot, another thing that happens is that it stops writing for a second or two. I am writing a letter and it may stop. For example, I was just writing a T. I made the vertical line and when I try making the horizontal line it wouldn’t do it. Similar to an ink pencil when it starts running out of ink. This happens often too. I used to have a screen protector that was crack in half, I used to lame that for the problem, but my screen protector is also new, I just installed it yesterday on my nee iPad Pro.

Bottom line is this, the pencil has been acting up on not just on one, but two iPads, and with two Apple pencils. I hope this doesn’t turn into one of those situations in which people keep complaining about something not working properly in the iPad or iPhone, but Apple keeps claiming that it doesn’t happen. That it is fine. Wink wink!
