Microsoft AutoUpdate Error on new iMac with Office 365

I have tried everything recommended on the MS website and the only way I can get rid of the error is to delete all the autoupdate files but then my Microsoft Apps are not updating. There has to be a solution. I have a new IMAC. with the latest OS loaded. I've tried every permission, and even completely reinstalling Office 365. No luck. Is there anyone out there with a solution that works. I'd like to have the feature of autoupdate but not the error.
