Is this an Apple Pay scam?

I got this text today…

from this number…. +1 (205) 581-6***

Important:  $171.30 was charged to your Apple ID via Apple Pay. Contact Apple Support if this wasn't you (877) 683-1***

I called the 877 number and a foreign accent said… ‘welcome to customer service’. I asked who’s customer service? The person replied… “apple customer service”. I said, I must have the wrong number, then he said, ‘which customer service are you looking for?’ I didn’t answer… he said something to someone else, and I heard a lot of other operators… yacking… I hung up.

Answering the number and claiming to be Apple is the whole point of those scams where they attempt to get your Apple ID/Password. It also alerts them that you are susceptible to being scammed if you call back, so you will get more of them.

Simply never call a number or click a link provided in an email/message and provide any personal information. Problem solved! Verification of any message is always possible by dealing with the company/financial institution directly with known contact info, not one they send you to use.

I was scammed by a person imitating B/A text regarding unauthorized payments. Connor (name used) pur me thru procedure to initiate Wallet - Apple Pay for $4200. It looked exactly like a text from B/A when I showed it to a bank emplyee. I changed my password and got a second call from Connor, but I then knew it was a fraud. He didn't get our money, It's still in the Wallet inmy bank. The account is restricted, but I believe I will be able to get the money back into my account after i reach Apple Cash. The 2 numbers from Connor were 1(8******0 and 1(8****6. I have photo of the initial text message from this scammer.

That’s a phishing attempt from scammers and its literally been reported 100’s of times if not 1000’s.

Apple would never contact you. Your bank (issuer of card) would contract you. Banks do the exact opposite of the message you received. If they suspect fraud the transaction is stopped immediately. You have to call to verify the transaction, not call to stop the transaction.

“Don't answer suspicious phone calls or messages claiming to be from Apple. Instead, contact Apple directly through our official support channels.”

”To report a suspicious SMS text message that looks like it's supposed to be from Apple, take a screenshot of the message and email the screenshot to reportphishing@apple.com.”

You can report phishing at these links and most importantly your local law enforcement.

This is a text I recieved.

An apple pay Transaction of 108.18 at the apple store was detected. If this is incorrect Please contact support team at 833-***-****.

Best option is to check transactions on your app store account. Any accounts you have debit cards, credit cards,...etc. This is not normal to download an app from someone talking on the other end of the phone.

If you do not see any odd transactions on any of your accounts this is most likely a phishing scam.

I had the same experience. I took it a little farther and they directed me to go to the apple store and get an app called ConnectWise Control then started walking me through a log on proceedure. She said it was so I could connect to the Apple security server. All along the way I was asking questions. We even got disconnected a couple of times and she kept calling me back. It was not very long after I asked her why calls were coming in as "potential scam" the she got irrate with me and accused me of wasting her time. That was pretty rich, I told her I would quit waisting her time if she promised not to call me back and ended the call.
