How can I disable icons in the Mail app on iOS 18.3?

Updated to the new iOS 18.3 and just opened Mail, to be visually assaulted by a new look with tags and email icons. Look I appreciate having the sorting options. But, I would prefer having the option to turn this off. I was able to bring it back to a list view in the preferences, but I can’t get rid of the icons next to each email, that are now taking up screen space. I have the largest sized iPhone for a reason. So I can enlarge my text to a size I’m able to read with my old man eyes. The icons now truncate the amount of text visible in the preview. I don’t need icons I need to know if I have to read the email now or later. Please fix this or give me a solve.

Hey there,

I understand your concern regarding the new icons in the Mail app on iOS 18.3, which are affecting your email preview visibility. To revert to a cleaner, more traditional list view without these icons, please follow these steps:

To Disable Contact Photos in Mail:

  • Go to Settings > Mail > In the Message List section, toggle off Show Contact Photos.

This action will remove the icons next to each email, providing a more streamlined list view.

Apple does listen to user feedback, if enough users provide feedback. I am usually never really bothered by changes which updates bring. Updates have release notes on the same page one uses to update their phone. I read them, so I'm pretty informed about changes. I also subscribe to publications like 9to5 Mac which highlights changes in iOS and I read those so I can better help those who update without reading release notes and are then surprised when something changes.

Technology is constantly changing. It changes perhaps faster than some might like, but change is inevitable. I choose to understand what's different and not let it bother me.

@lobsterghost1: thanks for mentioning release notes. I rarely look at them and just this morning spent 2 hours searching for why I could not find a way to send $$$ via apple cash on iPad because the prior method no longer exists. I send $$ on 1st ev month so Apple made a change sometime since 01 April. I just checked 18.4.1 Notes and no mention of this change (I’m referring to now using ‘+’ to access Apple Cash). In future I will be more diligent about reading the Notes but IMO the massive changes they have been making is driving me nuts. I will admit to being ‘over the hill’, approaching the big 8-0, but I believe I’m in the ‘above average’ User category. I don’t like these changes. And there are a lot more UI tweaks that I know is off topic here so nuff said.

You may be surprised to know many of the most senior members on this forum, who spend countless hours helping users just for fun, are in your age range. I'm in my 70s and there are senior members who are older than 80. I vowed long ago. that we live in a technology driven world and it's only going to become more complex, that I refuse to let the changes get me. I embrace them and accept there are times we have learn new ways to do what did just yesterday. It's actually good for our minds. And it's also why I spend som much time helping people here. People come here and present a mental puzzle that I have to use my brain to figure out. And that keeps me mentally young.

You are welcome to join us here and not just to say you don't like change, but help others through the changes, which will continue to be presented.

Take care.

Agreed, not that gui is terrible, but I would have been happy with plain old DOS. I didn’t realize there was a decent presence of folks of my gen here. I have made a number of contributions here over the years but certainly not on a regular basis.

Plain old DOS, eh? Wow! Now that's ancient.

I love that the many senior members here on this forum are people in our age group. I think they made the same decision I made to embrace technological change. And to not be frustrated by it.

I'm glad to hear you've made contributions over the years. We are a tight knit of people who have become friends over the years, helping others with their issues. We have a mission among us. And that is to do what we can to help those in need. Sometimes, we are greeted by gruntled users, which at times is uncomfortable when you understand we are unpaid volunteers.

At 63, I'm one of the younger senior members. I'd guess the average age of folks in levels 9 and 10 is closer to seventy.

I think someone who understands but doesn't necessarily like all the changes could be a real asset as a (somewhat?) regular contributor.

Agreed! We don't have to all like changes. We do need to know how to navigate the changes, so we can help others with them.
