Why is Face ID failing after updating to iOS 18.3.1?
Updated to 18.3.1 yesterday, and today Face ID fails every time. Anyone else? Is there a fix?

I wanted to give everyone an update... I couldn't get this resolved so I scheduled a Genius appointment.
They confirmed they couldn't get it to work... some speculation that the front-facing sensors for Face ID were about to fail, and that the 18.3.1 update might have just taken them over the edge. I'm not sure if I totally buy that, but they were able to resolve my issue by replacing the physical hardware part. They did the repair in an hour while I waited. Very professional and also very quick repair in my opinion.
The two sensors at play are not the clear front facing camera we use for selfies, but rather the two dark colored lenses to the left of the earpiece/speaker.
Again 12 Pro Max with AppleCare, here's what they replaced:
TrueDepth Camera, iPhone 12 Pro Max
Item Number: 661-23799
Cost without AppleCare $169.00
The "TrueDepth camera" on an iPhone 12 Pro Max refers to the front-facing camera used for facial recognition technology, known as Face ID, which captures detailed depth data of your face to securely unlock your phone; it is a 12MP camera on the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
I had this repaired 5 days ago and everything is still working great.
Same Issue on my IPhone 13 selfie camera not working and Face ID not working need Apple support for this Bug as this bug impacted the hole security .
A follow up - Face ID works for everything EXCEPT to unlock Iphone. I have to turn off "unlock iphone" under face id in order to be able to use password instead.

Apple doesn't read here in this user-to-user forum for feedback or suggestions. You can, however, let them know your thoughts here:
My 14 Pro updated without issue as all of my iPhones have. In particular, my FaceID functioned perfectly before 18.3.1 and functions perfectly after 18.3.1. Of all the things that can affect an update, the update itself is the least likely.
I know this response gets old but I suggest you contact Apple. It appears you already have, you just didn't like the answer.

How can you explain the fact that FaceID worked fine for so many, then after the update is installed FaceID no longer works? I experienced this, but was able to get FaceID functioning properly again by resetting it as I have already described in this thread. To me, it sure seems like an issue with the update.
Another aspect of this is that if any of the parts are 3rd party (eg non-Apple replacement screens), the iOS could be checking for validity and it may cause something to fail (like Face ID I suppose). This is worrying as Apple may be doing this to force users to go to Apple for genuine parts and creating another income stream.
One advantage though of using genuine Apple parts is to preserve security as the components and the iOS form part of the phone security.
I’ve been told that in the extreme case (which requires country level hacking), a non Apple part could be a vulnerability into the phone.
Yep - it’s a thing! So don’t listen to the nah sayers about hardware issue! Software runs hardware! Both my IPhone 12 failed in the same way, on the same day, in the same hour, immediately after the update…. Immediately!!
I have tried all options.
Ive reset all settings - no change.
l’ve done a full factory reset, wiped all the data and started over - no change.
lve gone through Apples fault diagnosis process online - detected the true depth camera was an issue - no change.
I’ve done a hard reset whilst in aeroplane mode - no change.
I’ve tried turning off ‘require attention for Face ID’ & ‘attention aware’ - no change.
Yeah I just checked the true depth camera using a 3d scanning app. Couldn’t start the true depth camera. Makes no sense considering I unlocked my phone with Face ID the day of the update. They forcible bricked the components.
I updated my Iphone 13 pro Max from 18.3.1 because started failing my face id after of this upgrade.I updated newly to version 18.3.2 hoping a fix in New upgrade. It worked 8 hrs more o less suddenly started giving the same fail with the Face id.I updated my Ipad pro 3 Gen to 18.3.2 and now is failing the face id together with my Iphone .I fear update another devices , my Macbook , my mac Studio and on...
ios 18.6
Has anyone tried to Reset All Settings? Does this work ?
I'm engaging the media because Apple is not acting to our satisfaction and playing this out like it's our fault. Guess what, I'm not losing another device due to Apple's lack of testing. I lost an Apple watch 5 which still looping due to an update.
@ABC @GMA customers are reporting Face ID failures causing the camera to fail after @Apple update 18.3.1. They want customers to pay for the repairs because the diagnostic tool shows a hardware issue. #Bad @AppleSupport Your software caused the hardware issues #News #Investigate
My Face ID stopped working after 18.3.1 was installed on my iphone 11 and it will not let me reset it despite all the suggested fixes. This is definitely as a result of the update as it worked immediate beforehand and stopped working immediately after the update completed!!
I really hope Apple will be providing a foc fix for this issue as a matter of urgency
