Why does Apple Maps say Gulf of America?
The Gulf of Mexico is the global name for the Gulf of Mexico. Why has Apple changed it to the Gulf of America? That is not the correct name. not the official name.

What is the region set on your device/Apple Account? Physical location would not be expected to make a difference whether you use a VPN or not.
after several questions to apple support. I have found out
1 that Apple app just uses usgs names and data so if the usgs changes the name then Apple just uses it.
2 that all Apple users world wide see the new name.
3 that Apple support is taking feedback
For everyone here, Apple does not read these threads. If you want to communicate to Apple directly, please send them feedback here:
Feedback - Maps for iOS and iPadOS - Apple
Mr. Finch (and others) have already explained the workings.
Your indignation w/ Apple (who BTW is not even present in this community of fellow users) is at best misplaced.
You CAN make feedback directly TO Apple here:

Names are, of course, malleable. Maps reflect changing and fluid datasets and names that vary greatly from one region to another. The USGS has changed the name of the body of water. As such, users in the United States see the official name as determined by the USGS. International users see the body as named for 400+ years. This is not unusual as many place names are called by different names in different regions.

Google has it too. Is there a real map app or do we need a new one?
So far, MapQuest is an option for you.
Maps.me shows Gulf of Mexico. It’s also available offline.
swing42..
Perhaps you'd also need to watch your pets names too?
..If your black Lab, answered to Ralph, now won't he come
to heel. Instead, respond - only to 'pinkFrenchy Poodle'.
Since by decree and without practical reason, the
word may come down (or up) to make that pet also
be required to use different names, than assigned at
birth; and against believed systems that may frown.

won't do here. Newer land, defines life more recently.
..As stated here, in 'non-political' neo-humor sense..!🙃💮
Who on earth gives a flying ____ what the name on the map says? GPS navigation still works on it, boats still float on it, and nearly everyone complaining about the name change has neither seen, swam, sailed, bicycled, or walked on it. There are those in this country that are incensed with the word America though.

I agree that most have never even see the label until they have actively looked for it. I can say that anytime I use Apple Maps, there is no way that the map is even zoomed out enough to see the label. In no way does it come up when I am searching for businesses or getting driving directions.

While I understand, in theory, the objections, I also don't see that it makes any real difference to my life or anyone else's.
I do have feelings about changing Denali to Mt. McKinley. I find it interesting that no one is complaining about that change here. It took Apple a little longer to implement that but it has changed.

And I have feelings about NOT changing Mt. Rainier to Tahoma. Admiral Rainier was Royal Navy, and fought on the British side in the Usonian Revolution.

I will work on it. Is "Usonian" a typo? Or is it an evolution of your new word? It's sound a bit less alien but still pretty good. I'd vote for it.

No, Usonian is a proposed name for residents of the United States, and used by Frank Lloyd Wright to describe prefab metal house designs that he actually built and that still have people living in them→https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usonia

And,my old Alma mater Ft. Bragg has had its name restored, not for Braxton Bragg of the Civil war era, but another decorated Bragg from WW2.
And apparently, people on both sides are unhappy about it. I find it a bit humorous.
