Air Tag from now-defunct Apple account a lost cause (i.e. now useless)?

Deleted old an old Apple account, as two had been created, just wanted one. Apparently, the Apple tag I bought for my current iphone was assigned and never unassigned before I deleted the old account.

I want to assign the AirTag to my new Apple ID - same phone, but can't. I can't get back into the deleted Apple account, and that old gmail address has been trashed already.

I tried to unscrew/reset my AirTag and assign to my new Apple ID, but it won't work.

Solutions?

Thanks

iPhone SE, iOS 18

Unfortunately for your old AirTag there is no solution to this because you deleted your Apple Account to which it was attached.

I am told by other users that Apple would have provided you with all the information about what happens when you delete an Apple Account, and this information is given also in How to delete your Apple Account - Apple Support. One of these warnings here is: Make sure you sign out of all your devices to avoid issues with apps that use your Apple Account or iCloud. After your account has been deleted, you can’t sign out of iCloud or turn off Find My iPhone Activation Lock on your devices. If you forget to sign out, you might not be able to use your device when your account is deleted.
