Format USB on MacBook Pro running on Sequoia?

I’m trying to format a USB drive to FAT32 on my Mac Book Pro without success. The external drive doesn’t show up in Finder.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 15.3

Is this what you are doing? Where does your problem come up?

  • Open Disk Utility: Locate and open the Disk Utility application on your Mac.
  • Select the External Drive: In the sidebar of Disk Utility, find and select the external drive you want to format.
  • Erase: Click the "Erase" button (or "Partition" if you are using the older Disk Utility).
  • Choose Format: In the dropdown menu, select "MS-DOS (FAT)" (which is macOS's label for FAT32).
  • Name the Drive (Optional): You can optionally give the drive a name in the "Name" field.
  • Erase: Click the "Erase" button to begin the formatting process.
  • Follow Prompts: Follow any on-screen prompts to complete the formatting.
