How to get ipad air to stop charging macbook pro?

I never had this issue till I was forced to upgrade from my 2020 macbook pro to a 2023 M3 pro. I plug my iPad air into my macbook pro and they go back and forth charging each other, even when my iPad is at 1% and my mac is fully charged. I try to not only use my mac to charge other devices, but in class I don't have access to a plug. If anyone has a solution, I would be more than grateful, please and thank you!

The iPad does not "charge" the MacBook Pro. It may draw charge from the MacBook Pro as every device on the USB ports of the MacBook Pro has to speak to the MacBook Pro's USB controller chip. As such Energy Saver and put hard drives to sleep when possible on Energy Saver system settings will cause the ports to go into low power mode. This happens also when you close the laptop's screen lid. Restarting the machine brings it back into high power mode. Keep the computer powered externally, or get an external powered USB hub that doesn't use the computer's power to operate to charge your iPad while it is charging and connected to the Mac.
