Why does my right AirPod only work when the left is in, and how do I fix it?

my right AirPod suddenly stopped working by itself, it only works when I put the other in and even then when I press to skip it doesn’t do anything or even make any noise. It doesn’t say it’s connected or I can’t hear anything by itself and when I put the left one in I can hear through both.
