How do I set Google Map as iPhone's default navigation app for CarPlay?

With 18.4 I can set Google Maps as my default navigation app (EU)

However when I ask Siri for directions (CarPlay) it opens Apple Maps.

How is this actually changing the default navigation preference????

From other forums deleting Apple Maps just makes things worse!

Directions always open from google maps I can’t click any links to get Apple Maps to work. They all open with google. Even without the google maps app. It just opens online then tries to redirect me to getting the google maps app. I’ve checked all my setting for the default app to be maps but it still doesn’t work. It is really frustrating. If I use Siri, it opens in Apple Maps but that’s the only way it works. It is getting frustrating to not be able to use the phones default map app.

Apple maps seems to default to driving directions Apple maps always seems to default to driving directions even though I never use a car and set walking or public transport as preferred type of travel, it is but button to press and select walking or public transport but this gets very annoying and ruins the user experience. What purpose is served by offering to select a preference in settings when it always defaults to the same? And I refuse to use the competition mainly for privacy concerns… but getting very frustrated with this user experience. [Re-Titled by Moderator]
