How can I cancel a device removal request in Find My?

My iPhone 14 Pro was stolen, and I accidentally entered my Apple ID credentials on a phishing website. Soon after, Find My started showing:

“This device will be removed on 02 May 2025” with a red trash icon.

I changed my Apple ID password successfully and enabled two-factor authentication the next day. The device is still listed under my account in Find My, showing a last known location — but no recent updates.

Apple Support told me the message means it’s already removed, but I can still see the device and track its last location. Some sources suggest Apple may cancel the removal after securing the account. Is this true? Has anyone seen the “will be removed” message disappear after password change?

I’d appreciate any help or similar experiences!

Thank you for your response — it's helpful, and I’ve already accepted the loss.

As a software engineer, I understand that Apple doesn’t manage user accounts in real-time, and that anyone with Apple ID credentials can associate a device with their account. However, in cases where Stolen Device Protection (SDP) is enabled, it would make sense for Apple to implement an additional verification step before allowing a device to be removed from iCloud.

If someone gained access to an account through phishing or social engineering, they could initiate a removal request — but with SDP enabled, Apple could require further validation to ensure that the credentials weren’t obtained fraudulently.

Since each Apple device is tied to a unique serial number and IMEI, and these appear in Find My, Apple can clearly identify the device. So again, in the presence of SDP, a second layer of ownership verification could make this system more secure and protect users from exactly this kind of attack

The significant locations lock is the second layer - ie you could not have done this except at your (preumably) safe home location.

There are no tools to protect someone from making a mistake except the confirmation messages. This is a very common scam. If people don't know that Apple never get involved with these loss/theft matters then such scams can thrive, and yes such a warning could be useful in the on screen find my removal process
