The USB-C ports on your MacBook Air are multi-purpose ports that support

  • Traditional USB
  • DisplayPort
  • USB4
  • Thunderbolt 4
  • Charging of the MacBook Air

They adapt to whatever you plug in.

To connect a USB-C (USB) device, you would just plug it in directly.

If you are talking about plugging in devices with USB-A plugs on the ends of their cables, there are various ways to do that, including

  • Adapters like the Apple USB-C to USB adapter (that use up one USB-C port to give you one USB-A port)
  • Simple powered USB-A hubs that use up one USB-C port to give you four or more USB-A ports
  • More elaborate USB-C and Thunderbolt hubs and docks that often give you multiple types of ports (e.g., a HDMI port or DisplayPort, USB-A and USB-C data ports, an Ethernet port, and a SDXC memory card reader).
  • Replacement cables. (E.g., if you have a portable hard drive with a Micro USB 3.0 B socket, and a Micro USB 3.0 B to USB-A cable, you can get a cable that goes directly from Micro USB 3.0 B to USB-C.)
