How do I stop my iMac to open full screen window automatically?

I use a 24" screen out of need to have 2 or 3 documents open. Suddenly, while working in one screen, it opens to the full 24" full screen. I have changed everything I could find that relates to that "automatic opening"—but to no avail. I use Sequoia 15.3.2 What am I missing? Thank you.
