I don’t know if the screen has been knocked, but i’ve woken up with my laptop slightly open and the screen is now black with a white vertical line. It has said get maintenance previously but i thought that was for the charging.

It is a bad Display Assembly which will need to be replaced. It looks like there may be a chip in the center of the Bezel. The arc of purple dots is odd and almost suggest a break there which is not too surprising since it leads right to the camera which many people tend to cover.
You need to have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine the laptop to provide you with a repair estimate.
