My iPhone exchanges contacts with another when kept side by side?
Every time my phone is next to another it just exchanges contacts with it. Is there any way to turn the feature off?

I think you might mean Name Drop:
Turn off NameDrop on iPhone
NameDrop is on by default. To turn off NameDrop (and other Bring Devices Together features), go to Settings > General > AirDrop, then turn off Bring Devices Together.
Use NameDrop on iPhone to share your contact info - Apple Support

I believe you're referring to AirDrop. And phones don't just share contacts unless you accept a contact or the other person accepts a contact. This link explains more, including how to turn receiving off --> How to use AirDrop on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Thanks. I was at least in the right area, but hadn't considered they might be referring to NameDrop, which is of course part of AirDrop.
I had to go look it up. I always forget the name.

Hello~ Lots more questions today? This is the NameDrop feature as pointed out.

It's not a feature I use much, if ever. My phone is rarely sitting side-by-side with someone else's iPhone. And even if it was, you still have to accept a "drop."
Same. And the one time I tried to use it, I couldn't get it to work. But that was probably user error.

In all the years AirDrop has been available, I was dropped a contact by someone once, which I accepted successfully. But just the one time.
It’s a popular feature in certain business settings. I occasionally go to Chamber of Commerce functions and see a lot of people using it to exchange contact information. It’s also certainly a generational segment using it as well.

I guess that makes me, generationally, an "old codger!"

I am a curmudgeon. I put periods at the end of sentences in text messages. Apparently, that's considered "cold" and "dismissive" among kids today.
